ENTRY PROCESS
The World Cup entry process is managed by Cycling NZ. Their process is outlined here.
Riders wishing to enter World Cup rounds must first complete the online application form here:
Cycling New Zealand needs the following before completing entries for World Cup entries. (If you don’t have the information when you completing the application form, the details can be emailed to eden.healey@cyclingnewzealand.nz.)
Duty of Care provider*
*This is compulsory for ALL ATHLETES – who is responsible for you in a case of emergency while at the event? This must be someone at the event.
If under 18 consent form to be signed by a parent or guardian
Entry fees and associated support costs will be billed to the riders by BMX NZ after entry confirmation by UCI.
Ride-Level Assessment
World Cup racing is the most challenging environment in BMX Racing, so CNZ/BMXNZ wishes to take steps to mitigate the risk of increased injury of NZL riders at any World Cup events moving forward. To do this, from January 1, 2024 and dependent on the tracks announced to host World Cup events in any year, CNZ and BMXNZ may require riders who wish to enter any World Cup event, that have not competed in a UCI World Cup or World Championship event in the last two years, to provide proof of ability.
Assessment details can be found here.
All riders who meet these criteria will be eligible to enter any UCI BMX World Cup events moving forward subject to the usual licensing and insurance requirements.
BMX NZ SUPPORT
BMX New Zealand works alongside Cycling New Zealand to support New Zealand riders through the World Cup entry and event process.
Where a BMX New Zealand Team Manager is appointed, the Team Manager provides operational support before and during the event. This includes:
BMX NZ Rider support does not include coaching, athlete performance management, medical treatment, travel booking, accommodation booking, financial assistance, or parental/guardian responsibilities.
The Team Manager does not assume parental or guardianship responsibilities and does not replace the rider's nominated guardian or support person.
RIDER RESPONSIBILITIES
World Cup riders are responsible for planning, funding, and managing their own campaign. This requires riders to:
Duty of Care
Responsibility for athlete welfare ultimately remains with the rider and their nominated Duty of Care provider. Riders, particularly those under 18 years of age, must have clear welfare, supervision, emergency contact, and support arrangements in place throughout the trip.
For riders who do not already have a suitable Duty of Care person travelling with them and BMX New Zealand may arrange one for the relevant World Cup event. The fee for this service is $300 per World Cup weekend.
WORLD CUPS - NZ TEAM MANAGER | EOI
BMX New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest from individuals who would like to contribute to the future success of New Zealand riders on the UCI BMX Racing World Cup circuit by becoming part of a developing Team Manager programme.
As participation in international competition continues to grow, BMX New Zealand aims to establish a small pool of capable and committed Team Managers who can provide consistent support to riders throughout the World Cup season. This initiative is focused on building organisational resilience, creating succession pathways, and ensuring riders have access to high-quality team support at international events.
The Team Manager role is an important leadership and coordination position, providing practical assistance and support to riders before and during competition. Team Managers act as a key point of contact, helping to ensure athletes are well prepared and supported throughout each World Cup weekend.
The job description outlining the role and responsibilties can be found here. Full training will be provided.
Applicants should be aware that the role requires a significant commitment of time and energy, including preparation in the weeks leading up to an event and approximately 8-9 days of travel per World Cup round. The position requires flexibility, strong organisational skills, and the ability to work effectively with riders, families, coaches, officials, and event organisers.
The role is unpaid and while BMX New Zealand is committed to growing and supporting the Team Manager programme, funding remains limited. As a result, the role is also largely self-funded. Financial assistance of $100 per rider per weekend can now be provided to offset a portion of travel-related expenses.
Successful applicants will require a UCI technical licence. As part of this process, you will be reqiired to submit to NZ Police vetting and complete an online safeguarding course. Details of these processes will be provided as needed.
WORLD CUPS - DUTY OF CARE PROVIDE | EOI
BMX New Zealand is seeking expressions of interest from individuals who are interested in becoming accredited Duty of Care Providers for New Zealand riders competing on the UCI BMX Racing World Cup circuit.
International competition requires riders to have access to an independent, non-riding adult who can act in their best interests and provide welfare, support, and decision-making assistance in the event of illness, injury, or other emergencies. To support the ongoing growth of New Zealand's international racing programme, BMX New Zealand aims to establish a pool of trained and accredited Duty of Care Providers who can be assigned to World Cup events as required.
Duty of Care Providers play an important role in supporting rider wellbeing and safety during World Cup events. Responsibilities include attending official practice sessions and race days, acting as an emergency contact and advocate when required, and providing event-related welfare support in accordance with BMX New Zealand policies and procedures.
The job description outlining the role and responsibilties can be found here. Full training will be provided.
Successful applicants will be required to complete the accreditation process, including police vetting, safeguarding training, and role-specific induction. Strong communication skills, sound judgement, reliability, and the ability to work effectively with athletes, families, team managers, coaches, and officials are essential.
To support the sustainability of the programme, BMX New Zealand intends to offer this optional service to U23 and Elite riders (U19+) on a user-pays basis. Riders electing to utilise the service will contribute a fixed fee per World Cup event, which will be used to help fund the travel and event-related expenses of the assigned Duty of Care Provider.
Successful applicants will require a UCI technical licence. As part of this process, you will be reqiired to submit to NZ Police vetting and complete an online safeguarding course. Details of these processes will be provided as needed.
